Happy Death Day 2 U

If I was stuck in a time loop watching this film – I wouldn’t care!

We have yet another sequel, but I am not mad as I loved the original film. But I always get nervous as films will always be compared to their counterparts. Luckily this film works perfectly.

The original Happy Death Day was set on Tree’s Birthday 18th September. Happy Death Day 2U is set the very next day, 19th September. This could be troublesome, but the sequel has remained with the same crew, same director, same cinematographer and same music director.

This lends itself to the smooth transition from one film to the next. This is definitely a film that you need to see the original before seeing the sequel as there are so many Easter eggs! Especially relating to Back To The Future, which was a big influence in this film.

So, of course you know the drill

 * SPOILER ALERT*

Some of my favourites are:

  • The woodchipper scene, which is called Biff’s Tree Cutting Service, a nod to Biff the bully from the Back To The Future trilogy.
  • There is also in the background of the skydiving scene “Like a Leaf” written on the plane, another homage to the joke Biff always messed up, “Make like a tree and leaf.”
  • Like a Leaf
  • 88 mph in the car
  • Poster on the wall[1]
  • BTTF Poster
  • Red Hawaiian shirt in the background
  • BTTF2

I live for these sort of references in films!

An extra one the Greek Mythology buffs:

  • Ryan’s Proton Converting Device. He named it Sissy, which sounds suspiciously like Sisyphus, who escaped death and was forced to roll a boulder up a hill, which constantly rolled back down, for eternity. [2]
  • Cissy

The story is as seamless as these references and of course with any slasher film, a higher death count. In the first film there are 14 deaths, 8 of these are Tree’s. In this film there are 20 deaths, but luckily for Tree she only dies 7 times, but of course they are hilarious.

My personal favourites, the skydive and the electrocution.

The comedy keeps rolling even with the costumes.

FML

Speaking of costumes, some eagle eyed viewers may have spotted a huge clue to the multiverse theory. Look closely at these two photos:

The Gigs are he same band, but different locations….Butterfly Effect is in full effect people!

Happy Death Day                                         Happy Death Day 2 U

Clocks

Speaking of which DO NOT LEAVE IN THE CREDITS!!! Trust me it makes everything make sense and leads us to thinking there is going to be another film! I am buzzing!

If you liked the original you will love this film, I guarantee it!

My blog so my views I give it 5/5!

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 3D

Magical as expected but longwinded and confusing.

I was raised in the height of Pottermania and I am a proud Slytherin 😊

Me

I used to love the build up before a new book and later on with the movies, so I know the characters inside and out, just like a lot of my fellow Potterheads.

As soon as the film starts with the faint notes of Hedwig’s theme, the Goosebumps began.

You can tell the heads of production have remained the same, David Yates stayed as director and J K Rowling wrote the screenplay, so I expected the film to be true to its origins. But my advice is to not see it in 3D, there is no need. I think I actually enjoyed it more in 2D than 3D.

We have the usual group back in the driving seat and I am glad to see them return.

But we also have new (ish)characters such as Nagini, Dumbledore and of course Grindelwald.

So now comes the WARNING if you haven’t seen it yet.

SPOILER ALERT!

The film starts just a few months after the previous film ends. 1927 Grindelwald in jail, he escapes, you know the jist. But the main things we learn are that:

  1. Credence isn’t dead – he survived the previous film
  2. Grindelwald and Dumbledore used to be friends (lovers??) They have a blood pact so cannot fight each other.
  3. Leta had a brother who she unintentionally killed
  4. Credence Barebone was born as Aurelias Dumbledore

Credence and Nagini

Of course, nobody really cares about anything of this expect. Who the hell the Aurelias Dumbledore?

Just like many fans I went straight to the books to construct the Dumbledore family tree…. Yes, I am that sad.

Family Tree

This looks perfectly fine until you add the dates.

1881 – Albus born

1883/1884 – Aberforth born

1885 – Ariana born

1891 – Ariana was attacked by muggles. Percival took revenge on the boys and ended up being imprisoned in Azkaban.

1899 – Ariana accidently killed her mother as she couldn’t control her powers. Albus looks after his siblings.

Aurelius is supposedly born in 1901. So, at best he could be a half brother if you believe that Percival was able to either escape or have relations in Azkaban.

Another issue in the timeline is Professor McGonagall being a teacher at Hogwarts in 1927, when she isn’t born until 1935?

I am a traditionalist and it annoys me that the story and timeline has been changed just so that they can make more money. It is a cinematic marvel as all the films are, but I find the story a bit lacking. It is all the build up to the next film and at 2h 15mins I am not surprised children couldn’t keep their attention throughout.

I did like the little Easter Eggs hinting back to other films such as:

  • The bucket being a portkey
  • The flash of green light – The Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra)
  • The Imperius Curse (Imperio)
  • Phoenix
  • Philosophers Stone
  • Polyjuice Potion – Twitching on the face

Over all the casting was fantastic and I am really looking forward to the next instalment of the franchise. But I can’t say I am sold on how this is going to work into the timelines.

A clever feminist take down of society – love, love, love!

This film came out of the blue for me. I hadn’t heard a lot about it until it appeared on the cinema listings. I don’t know why! The premise I love the idea of because in 2018 this is something that could happen. People hacking photos, especially from prominent people, like presidents… oops I meant mayor 😉

The best way I can describe this film is Mean Girls meets the Purge in Salem, Massachusetts during the Witch Hunts.  This is even suggested in the costume.

I love these little Easter eggs and think it is really clever.  Something else I like in this film is the use of the colour red, and the hues. Red is used in some many ways, it is used to show sexiness, empowerment, danger, and hatred. It comes full circle.

Cast

I don’t want to give too much away as I saw this film before it is released on the 23rd November.

This film gets your thinking about your own online footprint and these are so many fantastic quotes.

This may not be a perfect film, but it made me laugh, made me think and says a lot about society.

So, I don’t care it’s a 5/5 from me! I’m off to see it again!

Fitting for Freddie but not True to the story

I am a massive Queen and I grew up listening to them thanks to my Dad. So it only seemed fitting that I saw this with my parents. This gave me a nice chance to discuss it with them and get their opinion.

I had high hopes because to take such an iconic person such as Freddie Mercury makes it difficult to stand up to the hype. When I saw this was only a 12A film I was confused as his flamboyant lifestyle definitely wasn’t 12A material in my opinion.

One thing I really liked in the film was the use of light and colour pallets.

There is a stark contrast in the two sides of Freddie. The stage Freddie and the real Freddie. The bright flamboyant tones of Freddie on stage use cold bright lighting whereas the real Freddie is in warmer tones and muted colours. To me this symbolises Freddie really well and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

The biggest issue I have from this film is the liberties they have taken with the timeline. I understand that they want to use all the classic songs but some of the mistakes are massive.

  • Fat Bottomed Girls is played during Queens first US Tour in 1974 but was not released until 1978.
  • We Will Rock You is shown being recorded in 1980 but it was on News Of The World album that was recorded in 1977.
  • Another One Bites the Dust is seen as being a part of the disco experiment from 1982 but it was released in 1980.

I am sorry, but I am a traditionalist and these things really takes me out of the movie. My Dad had exactly the same feelings and was checking on Google to make sure he was right. (Not just Old age and all that!)

The cast though were fantastic and I couldn’t have hoped for anyone else to play Freddie like Rami Malek. The mannerisms were perfect and on point.

Freddie Cast May Cast Taylor Cast Deacon Cast

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury       Gwilym Lee as Brian May        Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor    Joe Mazzello as John Deacon

But I can’t give it full marks. As much as I enjoyed it and it gave been Goosebumps just like Queens music does, I cannot forgive the timeline mistakes.

The Meg

A Meg-nificant Movie Mistake

This film plays on one of the most well known fears throughout the world…How do you really know what is lurking beneath you in the ocean?

So far scientists have only explored around 20% of the world’s oceans which means we know so little about the environment, the climates, and the species that dwell below in the deep., and back in 1975 Jaws brought this fear to the forefront of peoples minds and although many years have passed, can you tell me when you go in the water you don’t still hear the chilling theme tune?

Besides have you seen Shark Week?!?! They are discovering the bigger sharks are dwelling at deeper depths and aren’t normally seen at the surface, so what else is hiding down there?

Since Jaws is one of my favourite films and got me looking at films from numerous aesthetic angles I can’t review a shark film without discussing them both!

Just like Jaws, The Meg is based on a book and is based around the deep sea research from an ocean based marine biology centre. Oh wait does this sound familiar?  You bet! From 1975 lets time travel to 1999 and Deep Blue Sea. Marine Biologists are researching on a floating rig in the middle of the Ocean. I’m starting to get a bad feeling about this already aren’t you?

So lets cut to the chase and look at our big bad sharks:

Jaws:

Great White Shark

Carcharodon carcharias

25ft or 7.5ms

Man- eater

Attacks from below

 Jaws.jpg

The Meg:

Megalodon

Carcharocles megalodon

68-88ft or 21-27ms

Top predadtor of the oceans

Extinct 2 million years

Lighting

We have learnt in recent years that giant Great White Sharks called mega-sharks do exist.

I would like to introduce you to Deep Blue, a 20 ft female Great White Shark found in the Guadalupe Islands off of Mexico. She is believed to be one of the biggest White Sharks discovered, but she is still growing. She is believed to be around 50 years old and she is still growing. She is only 5ft off the shark in Jaws, so who else is hiding down there?

Deep Blue

“You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat”

But I digress!

The Meg has tried to learn a lot from its predecessor shark films such as:

  • Using music to build tension
  • Not showing the shark straight away and playing on the audiences’ own fears
  • Using Point of View shots from both the characters and the sharks

But it differs on the way it has been filmed.

To get the best shots of the actors in the water they wanted to be able to control the environment so instead of shooting in the ocean they shot in a tan. I can completely understand the reasoning behind it but it is soo obvious! You know it isn’t the ocean, purely because there isn’t anything disturbing the shots and to me it is going to scare me of the ocean because it clearly isn’t the ocean!

In Jaws they filmed in the ocean and tied ropes on to the actors and pulled them around giving the authentic feel, admittedly the shark is nothing by todays standards it gave a focal point for the actors. This is the problem with CGI because the actors are trying to act with a tennis ball on a stick for reference. I don’t care if you were the world’s greatest actor, you are not going to get believable reactions. I really believed that with clever angles and a smaller realistic model this would have been a much better film.

In my opinion, this film is style over substance and is weakened by bad aesthetic choices – CGI can only take you so far.  I know it was never going to be a master piece, but I really had higher expectations, a few funny moments can’t save it.

Ocean’s 8

Sloppy, poorly executed and boring.

I love a good heist film and the original Ocean’s trilogy by Steven Soderbergh are some of my favourites. It is clever, funny and I never see the twists coming (no matter how ridiculous it may be …ahem…Julia Roberts playing Julia Roberts…) They are an enjoyable watch. The same cannot be said for this.

I have the same feelings about this film as I did with them remaking Ghostbusters, it is unnecessary. As a woman I personally find it personally insulting that great actresses are just rehashing something that a male cast has already done. Why can’t they just come up with original storylines that can let them shine in their own right. #StopRemakes

Stop Remakes

Considering the cast this film has I was expecting a lot, but the marketing and story-line ruined it.  For instance, if you look at the poster it is obvious that Anne Hathaway is a part of the plan in some way. So when this comes to light, the surprise is taken away leaving it flat.

The one scene that made me laugh was Anne Hathaway looking at herself in the mirror trying on the necklace….which is in the trailer! Nothing was there to keep me guessing and took me by surprise. I guessed what was going to happen and it was very apparent I was watching a film. Even the secret exchanges were sloppy and if that was the best take they could get, god knows what the other takes were like.

Mirror

The one thing I like about the film is how they have updated it in the techniques, such as Facebook stalking and having throw backs to the original films, as in the opening. But I would not recommend this to any fan of the original.

Sloppy, poorly executed and boring.

Solo: A Star Wars Story 3D

Better than I imagined.

I was on tenterhooks when it was announced that they were doing a Solo film as I am a traditionalist and cannot see anyone accept Harrison Ford in the role. Obviously, I know you can’t have a 75-year-old playing someone in their 20s but considering he has been playing the role for the last 40 years, it is hard to imagine anyone else stepping into his shoes. I have to admit I was wrong. Alden Ehrenreich is amazing! Not only do they look similar it is the mannerisms Ehrenreich has nailed!

Solo Comparison

Another character that was nailed was Lando Calrissian. I am in love with Donald Glover, and his many capes.  The cast have clearly studied the previous films and really kept consistent with the mannerisms, making it a really believable.

Lando comparison

The storywriters, Jonathan Kasdan and Lawrence Kasdan, names should sound familiar to Star Wars nerds. Lawrence Kasdan was one of the writers of The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This time he has teamed up with his son Jonathan to continue the Star Wars story, or rather revisit its past. I love a good continuation of crew as it makes the story flow right from A New Hope up to now.   Even in the story you can see these influences, such as the Sabacc dice.

The story has been set up ready for a sequel and Ehrenreich has been contracted for a further 2 movies, but Ron Howard the director has said nothing has been confirmed.

So watch this space!!

Sci-Fi pun intended 😊

Overall, I loved the film and it was OK in 3D, (still could have been used better in my opinion,) but I loved the story and how it impacts my view of Solo in previous films. Typical Star Wars film, lots of comedy, especially with the Droids, and you can see why characters are the way they are.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 3D

Jurassic Fans Rejoice!

I’m a big fan of the Jurassic Park franchise and have been since I was a child. I am that nerd in museums obsessed with dinosaurs. (The Brontosaurs is my favourite, love a gentle giant!) My Grandad Ron used to try and help me understand the size of them and telling me stories about them all the time…but I digress.

Because of this obsession when the Jurassic World trilogy was announced I was super excited. With the first one and the Indominous Rex.

Indominus Rex What a beauty!

But of course, the Velociraptors are the real stars of the show and I was devastated by the lost of Charlie, Delta and Echo. Luckily Blue was left alive and so was our Alpha Owen Grady. (Chris Pratt can be my Alpha any day 😉)

Blue

As much as I love the character of Owen, I can’t say the same for Claire. She annoyed the hell out of me, so she had some ground to cover to catch up. So, I was excited to see the next instalment. The second film of a trilogy is notorious for falling below expectations but not done that bad!

The film itself has a good story and you can see how it has developed over the 3 years since the last film. It is written by Colin Trevorrow, who was also the director of Jurassic World and Derek Connolly. They are well known to have a good working dynamic and Trevorrow is in line to director the next film. Having this continuity is beneficial to the story because it keeps up consistency and you can see the direction they are taking the characters in.

I love how in these films they have throwbacks to previous Jurassic Park films. In this film we see the return of old characters and symbols such as the amber cane.

(Hammond in Jurassic Park)      (Lockwood in Jurassic World)

We also see the infamous yellow jacket make a comeback!

It takes a more horror twist than other films due to the Director J A Bayona. When he was bought onto the project Trevorrow had a conversation with Bayona about the direction of the story.

“The first thing that he told me was that he thought about me because of The Orphanage, and I was very surprised about it and I was very intrigued. And then he told me that story, that the second half would play more like a haunted house movie. I fell in love with that idea.” (Edwards, 2018)

Although it may not be the most cinematic film or add anything ground-breaking to film as an art film, this film has got me really excited about the franchise once again. I love the story and the character development and can’t wait for 2021.

TOP TIP:

DO NOT SEE IN 3D!!

THERE IS NO POINT IT WONT ADD ANYTHING TO YOUR EXPERIENCE!!!

Deadpool 2

“Dark, Daring and Dreadfully Delightful!”

Well if you have read my blog before, you probably know how much I loved the original Deadpool – I even got re-tweeted opening up to my friends across the pond (Hi American friends!)

So as you can guess I was really looking forward to the sequel. As with many sequels the original cast players have returned but the same can’t be said for the crew. Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool was originally linked to the project but he parted ways after some disagreements with Ryan Reynolds. According to interviews Reynolds has given, it was over the role of Cable, but it seems to be an amicable split.

Ryan-Reynolds-and-Tim-Miller

“All I can really add is that I’m sad to see him off the film. Tim’s brilliant and nobody worked harder on Deadpool than he did.” (Wilson, 2016) Instead he was replaced by David Leitch, whose recent works include John Wick and Atomic Blonde.

Reynolds has also become a scriptwriter as well as a producer – what do we think to the next one? Reynolds directing????

Another great addition to the Deadpool family is Zazie Beetz – who plays Domino. You may recognise her from most recently Geostorm. I loved her, and he portrayal of the character. In a lot of scenes, I related to her an awful lot!

OK you know the drill

SPOILER ALERT!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET!!!

This film is a lot like it counterpart – lots of dirty jokes, cameos and of course passes at Wolverine!

I loved all the throw backs to the previous film! My personal favourite was the reference to the “1,600 kilos of cocaine somewhere in the apartment – right next to the cure for blindness”, which of course he finds in Al’s apartment right next to a package called “The cure for blindness”. He also takes a shot at the X-Men as we see Wade in Professor Xavier’s wheelchair and even in Cerebro!

We see Wade go through a real journey of self-discovery – mainly through film and pop culture references including but not limited to (Some of my favourites!) :

  • Say Anything – Deadpool-2-Radio
  • James Bond – Opening Credits
  • Flashdance
    Deadpool 2 Poster
  • Chibi-style
    Unicorn Poster
  • Celebrity references – George Michael and David Bowie
  • DC Universe – “So dark, you sure you’re not from the DC universe?”.
  • X-Men – 4-we-get-a-nice-shot-of-wade-racing-through-xaviers-mansion_pgza.640
  • Ryan Reynolds – Going back in time to stop Green Lantern being made

WB has a good sense of humour about it:

WB

  • Wolverine – “Fuck Wolverine. First he rides my coattails with the R-rating, and then, that hairy motherfucker ups the ante by dying! What a dick! Well, guess what, Wolvie? I’m dying in this movie.”
  • Brad Pitt – Before Josh Brolin got the role, Brad Pitt was interested but instead he got a cameo – see if you spot him 😉
  • Avengers – Hawkeye – “With this collar on, my superpower is just unbridled cancer. Give me a bow and arrow and I’m basically Hawkeye.”
  • Avengers – Thanos – “Zip it, Thanos!”
  • Avengers – Hulk – “Sun is getting real low.”

The trailer completely through me off base – which I loved, when you are introduced to the X-Force and then to have them practically all die is a big screw you to the audience!

My only criticism I had was the Wolverine jokes – there was so many and I felt we had already dealt which that. But that is just personal, I know people who loved them all!

A great watch, had me in stitches and I can’t wait for the third one!

Avengers Infinity War 3D

 “Marvel-lous Movie Magic”

I have been waiting for 10 years for this film as have all Marvel fans, and it does not disappoint!

This is part one of Infinity War which means lots of cliff-hangers, unknown character fates and so many possibilities in part two. They were filmed back to back for continuity and was wrapped in January 2018.

The last Marvel film was Black Panther from February and the last time the Avengers were together was 2 years ago in Captain America Civil War.

This story has been planned for 10 years and each character has gone through their character development over multiple films. This is why DC failed in their attempt as they ignored the individual characters. Maybe that is just my MCU love coming through!

I have one problem though – WHY IS BLACK WIDOW BLONDE!?!? There is no mention of this change of hair anywhere in the film! For 8 years since she was introduced in Iron Man 2, always been a red head. I want answers!!

OK rant over – So here it is guys:

SPOILER ALERT!

Even our bad guy Thanos’s background is developed which is a fantastic asset and makes him more relatable. He is humanised during his search for the Infinity Stones, especially for the mysterious Soul Stone, as he sacrifices his daughter Gamora.

 Stones

In previous movies we have just accepted that Thanos wants the Infinity Stones in order to rule the world, as most bad guys do. This time Thanos explains that he is trying to save the world. He believes “Life needs correction” and instead of having everyone starve, kill half the population and then everyone lives a better life. He sees it as a necessary evil and that it takes a strong person to make that decision. Really hardcore! In a flashback we see how Thanos believes he is saving Gamora as a child and trying to distract her from the horrible genocide going on around her. I love the depth of Thanos and it really makes you think would you be able to make a decision like that?

We have seen these sort of decisions before, just to name a few:

  • Avengers Assemble – Iron Man flying through the wormhole
  • Civil War – Should Wanda’s powers be allowed?
  • Guardian’s of the Galaxy – They all handle the power stone to save the world, not just Quill.
  • Doctor Strange – Protecting the Time Stone, regardless of anything else.

Another theme I like following through the timeline is the Ironic role of Wanda’s powers. Scarlett Witch was given her powers after undergoing tests using the Mind stone with her brother. (RIP Pietro!)  Her powers have been up for discussion numerous times, especially in Civil War when the Accords are draw up because of her. Ironically now she is the only person who can destroy an Infinity Stone, a decision (See trending theme!) she has to make sacrificing Vision, who possesses the Mind Stone to stop Thanos.

Now it comes down to the main discussion this film has brought about.

Who is Alive?!?!  Who is Dead?!??

Just as in the world when Thanos clicks his fingers and kills off half of the population, we lose half of our Avengers! I expected to see some deaths but this many no way! I may have cried…no judgment! In my defense it is heartbreaking to see your favourite characters disappear into dust, damn you Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. As the screenwriters for part two as well, they have a lot to answer for!

SURVIVORS

TEAM ALIVE

VICTIMS

TEAM DEAD

It isn’t just the Avengers we lose. In the Post credit scene we see Maria Hill and Nick Fury also succumb to the new world order. Before they do Fury, being Fury, makes one final call for help using an ancient pager displaying a blue and red signia.

CAP MARVEL

This is the symbol of Captain Marvel! Oscar winner, Brie Larson signed up to the role which has its own movie currently being filmed and due for release in March 2019. We already knew that she was going to be featured in Avengers 4 and this is our confirmation! We are going through big changes as we head into Phase 4 and a lot of the current cast have fulfilled their contracts and won’t be coming back to the universe after Avengers 4 – We are going to be introduced to exciting new characters. As much as it is going to hurt to lose our fan favourites, I know as a fandom we are going to embrace the next chapter.

Before I finish as usual Marvel has given us some great one liners and I couldn’t resist sharing some of my favourites.

Favourite Quotes:

“I am Groot.” “I am Steve Rogers.”

“Oh, screw you, you big green asshole! I’ll do it myself!”

“What’s the matter with you, kids? You’ve never seen a spaceship before?”

“Dude, you’re embarrassing me in front of wizards.”

“ Kick names, take ass.”

Groot: [in a mocking tone] I am Groot. Peter Quill: Whoa! Drax: Wow. Peter Quill: You got some acorns on you, kid. Rocket Raccoon: Ever since you got a little sap, you’re a total D-hole. Now, keep it up and I’m gonna smash that thing to pieces!”
