The Hunt

Good idea, poorly executed and marketed.

Well it has been a while but I am back and raring to go! I have found some comfort in the escape of watching films during lock down, but I missed the experience of going to the cinema. I have my own little ritual to my cinema trips. I arrive early, treat myself to a coffee, and start basing my ideas on the trailer and posters I’ve seen.

Normally you can get a pretty good idea about a movie based on the content before the release. So I first saw these posters:

So these were my assumptions and notes:

  • People are being hunted in the woods
  • Eerie images – thriller / horror film
  • Key words as violence and sick

Then I saw the trailer:

  • People wake up gagged in the woods
  • They are armed
  • They get hunted
  • Some get away and hunt the hunters
  • Explosions, blood and guts – thriller / horror genre

And then I watched it…..

First things first THIS IS NOT A HORROR FILM!!! This is a satirical political action film. This was my main problem with the film. I went in expecting one thing, and came out with something completely different. I’m going to be honest, I wanted to see some real horror and thriller moments and thats why I watched it but I was left unfulfilled.

Ok I admit there are blood and guts so i’m happy with that but the story was lacking. It is basically an US verses THEM mentality. Which is apparently what they were going for. Producer Jason Blum said “It was read as a satire, no different from The Joker or other movies that are violent. It was read as a movie that didn’t take sides…The audience is smart enough to know that what they’re seeing is a satire”.

So my issue is why not market it as a satire! I think it would have done better if it was marketed with the proper intention.

The one thing I did like was the wardrobe choices. Between the “Elite” and the “Deplorables”. You can see many stereotypes on both sides. Big shout out to David Tabbert, the costume designer. You saved this film for me.

Elite: Elites

  • Fox hunting gear
  • Suits
  • Waistcoats
  • Professional

Deplorables: Deplorables

  • Plaid shirts
  • Gun toting Redneck
  • Yoga pants
  • Ugg boots
  • Safari hunter
  • Caps

Overall I think it was an interesting idea, but its been marketed wrongly, and come out at the wrong time. As Crystal says in the film I think it “Depends on whether they’re smart pretending to be idiots or idiots pretending to be smart.” I think its a little of column A and a little from column B. There are always going to be conspiracies but having the link between ManorGate being very close to PizzaGate and the whole Epstein fiasco, I think it is very poorly timed.

Adrift

Beautiful Scenes, Beautiful Acting, Beautiful Film

I admit I am a big fan of “Man v Nature” survival films such as The Perfect Storm, The Shallows and Castaway, so this film is right up my street.

The Director Baltasar Kormákur is no stranger to survival films, as in 2015 he directed Everest, based on the 1996 Everest Disaster, and his latest film, is no exception, it is based on the true story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, who in 1983 were stranded after a storm at sea.

Adrift definitely has its own colour pallet, just as Everest did. Kormákur uses primary colours red and yellow to forecast danger signals, which is striking against the blue and grey background of the ocean. This is similar to Everest where the primary colours are reflected back from the white snow on the mountain.

Another thing I like about this film is that it is not chronological. Even though they filmed it chronologically in editing they jump within the timeline. This gives the effect that the characters are daydreaming about the past, whilst on the boat.

Filming was not an easy, as 90% of the movie was filmed at sea. According to interviews from the cast and crew days began at 4am and people were throwing up. So, the reality was “you’re either sun burnt, sleep deprived, or seasick” as they say in the film!

The cast are fantastic and Shailene Woodley gives a career best performance. You get dragged into the story and really care about the characters, especially when you know this happened.

Like many films there is a twist which would be great if you didn’t know the true story behind it, otherwise it is a little bit lost on you.

Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone.

“Almost Perfection”

I am a Sci-Fi fan and the Star Trek movies are some of my favourite movies. I love the characters and the cast and I am looking forward to seeing the next issue in the franchise.

This is the first movie that JJ Abrams isn’t directing and instead Justin Lim has taken over the reins. Abrams has stayed on as a producer but I admit I had a couple of worries about changing to a different director in a trilogy. Lim we know from the Fast and the Furious franchise so he understands about the character development throughout a franchise and is a big fan of Star Trek so I think it was a great decision to bring him on.

In an interview from 19th July 2016 with Hey U Guys Lin said “Star Trek should be equally compelling in a space war as it should be in two characters talking, it has limitless opportunities.” Unfortuately only a month before this interview was conducted Anton Yelchin (Checkov) was involved in a freak accident which led to his death. (Lin, 2016)

At the time of his death Yelchin had finished his scenes but the film was still in production and editing. Chris Pine said on Good Morning America “Our group if anything is a group of friends and family and it was nice to have them around to process what happened and pay tribute to who Anton was and to remember him and his smile and ride the waves of grief together.” I think this is a beautiful sentiment and shows how they have become so close during the filming of these three films.  (Pine, 2016)

As well as Yelchin’s tragic passing the cast and crew were also mourning the loss of Leonard Nimoy who played the original Spock, who passed away in February 2015. They were able to pay tribute to them both in a meaningful way. In the script Spock gets the news that older ambassador Spock Prime has passed away. Whilst going through his things Spock discovers an old photo of the original cast from the tv show. This memorialised the 50 year anniversary of Star Trek as well as one of its Stars. Quinto said “I feel like it was very important for me to find a way to include him in this film. And I thought that Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, our writers, did a beautiful job of really weaving him into the narrative, and not having it be a fleeting acknowledgement…”. (Oldies, 2016)

At the end of the movie they are toasting to “The enterprise, to absent friends”, at this point the camera lingers over Chekov and at the end of the credits it says “In memory of Leonard Nimoy” and “For Anton”. A touching sentiment.

Another issue that they faced during production was the choice to make Sulu gay as an homage to George Takei. I (as well as the World) were worried about how they would handle this and bring this into the story as it is a touchy subject nowadays. I think the way they did it was beautiful. Simple and beautiful. Sulu ran up to his daughter when they are at Yorktown and then it is revealed he has a husband who simply puts his arm around him as they walk away together. According to John Cho there was a kissing scene that was edited out. I think that not having the kissing scene was a good move as you can just feel the emotion without it being too in your face. I loved it. (Edwards, 2016)

This was not all doom and gloom and in fact is a very funny film. Simon Pegg joined the writers and I believe gave us some great quotes.

Spock: Fear of death is illogical.

Bones: Fear of death is what keeps us alive.

Kirk: Better to die saving lives than killing them.

Jaylah: Engineering.

Scotty: Aye, that’s right. I fix things. (Lin, Star Trek Beyond, 2016)

As much as I loved the film it wasn’t perfect. I noticed a couple of errors. The one that bugged me the most was when the crew are escaping the Enterprise in the Kelvin pods. When they get out of the pods suddenly Chekov and Kirk have changed clothes.

Another continuity problem I discovered was with Kalara. She obviously does not speak English and she is speaking using the Universal Translator. This automatically turns whatever she was saying into English BUT we always hear her speak in her alien language before the English kicks in. Sometimes this doesn’t always happen. Although this isn’t a big issue I just found that this took me out of the film a bit, which was a shame as I felt so enveloped in the film.

As per usual you know my issues with 3D films but when it comes to Sci-Fi and Space it is amazing. With the 3D it was visually spectacular, I can’t help but have a huge smile on my face. 4 stars.

Now You See Me 2

“Magically Mediocre”

Sequels are a funny thing. They normally all go downhill from the original but I am an optimist when it comes to films. I was a huge fan of Now You See Me (NYSM) as I love magic. It is a personal love of mine as it fascinates me. I really liked the story and the cast and characters so I was really looking forward to seeing the sequel. As soon as I saw they were making a second film I was convinced they should call it “Now You Don’t” the marketing writes itself! Regrettably even a better name couldn’t save this film.

I was bitterly disappointed. It was very drawn out, they tried to up the stakes and everything but I was bored and it didn’t catch my attention. It was very over the top and the storyline kept getting more involved for no real reason. Changing the director gave it a different feel I’m not sure whether it made much of a difference.

*Spoiler Alert*

The one thing that I really liked was the death of Lionel Striker. The idea of it resonated with the true story of Amazing Joe Burrus. On October 31st 1990 this magician tried to do Harry Houdini’s buried alive trick on the anniversary of Houdini’s death. Although Houdini never performed it on stage because he died before hand it is one of his famous tricks mainly due to the fact that it almost killed him during one performance. Burrus said “I consider myself a master of illusion and an escape artist. I believe I am the next Houdini and greater, to me, that is what an escape artist is: to put myself in an impossible situation and get out of it.” (AP, 1990)

Check out the video below, but bare in mind it is not suitable for people of a nervous disposition.

Unfortunately Burrus didn’t make it out alive and now shares something else with Houdini, his death date. Striker’s death in the film reminded me of the ever present danger that magicians face during every trick. I like the reality check.

The main issue I had with the film was the timeline. They said that the events of the first film was a year ago, so because of this I have it in my mind the timeframe. Later in the film Thaddeus says he has been in jail 18 months.  How does that work as he was arrested at the end of the first film? Maybe I am being picky but I am a stickler for these sort of continuity errors.

Another issue I have with any sequel is when they change characters. Isla Fisher had to drop out of the film due to her pregnancy and was replaced with Lizzy Caplan. Caplan did a great job and brought a new energy into the film but even her ever present optimism could not save this film. I mean come on what is with Merritt’s twin Chase? It is way too out of the box and very predictable. Also Daniel Radcliff as the bad guy was more comical that believable. Merritt referring to him as the “man-boy” was on point! (Chu, 2016)

Unfortunately with the world of magic once the trick has been explained then the experience is over. This makes me worry about the fact that they are doing another film and making it a trilogy when it’s not really needed or asked for.

I can only give it 3 stars.
